This is the text of the welcome message received when you subscribe to the Roblee-L mailing list hosted at Rootsweb.com. This text is included for easy reference. Please note, the Roblee list location and address have moved on Rootsweb to a different server software, but these instructions are generally valid.

Welcome to the ROBLEE-L Mailing List

+++++ Version 1.3 - Revised August 20, 2004 +++++

All subscribers to the ROBLEE-L mailing list receive this message upon joining the list. Please print out, read and save this message for future reference. Instructions for subscribing, unsubscribing, changing to digest mode, and posting messages are provided here.

1. Purpose. The ROBLEE-L list is for sharing genealogical information and preserving the history of families with the ROBLEE surname and variant spellings. These include ROBLEE/ROBBLEE/RUBLEE/RUBLIER/RUBLEYER and others. The Roblee researchers have a web site at:

http://www.robleesonline.org/index.html

2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you would not be getting this message.

You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to ROBLEE-L as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to "digest mode" are given below.

For future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send a message to

ROBLEE-L-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command

subscribe

and no additional text (and no signature line). If you have difficulty removing your signature lines, you can put the word "quit" on the line after the line containing the word subscribe.

3. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to

ROBLEE-L-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command

unsubscribe

and no additional text. Again, if you have difficulty removing your signature lines, you can put the word QUIT on the line after the line containing the word unsubscribe.

If your e-mail address goes bad or your mailbox fills up, you'll be automatically unsubscribed by the mailing list software after the eighth message in a row bounces back to RootsWeb, which provides the server for the list.

4. How to change to digest mode. In digest mode, several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single larger message. To receive the digest version of ROBLEE mailings, follow these two steps:

First, send the command "subscribe" to ROBLEE-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests (do not type the quotation marks in the body of the message).

Second, send the command "unsubscribe" to ROBLEE-L-request@rootsweb.com. This will discontinue mail mode (do not type the quotation marks in the body of the message).

5. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. To stop receiving messages, follow the directions above and "unsubscribe" when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply "subscribe" again using the instructions above.

6. Posting to the list. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to ROBLEE-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. Do not send a message to the ROBLEE-D list.

7. Custodian of the ROBLEE-L list. This list is "owned" and coordinated by Douglas G. Detling, ddetling@greencity.org.

If you have problems getting unsubscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I'll try to resolve the problem.

8. Print Out, File, or Save this message. Even if you decide not to save this message, please remember that, as with all mailing lists at RootsWeb, the subscribe and unsubscribe messages go to

ROBLEE-L-request@rootweb.com, not to the

ROBLEE-L@rootsweb.com list itself.

If such messages do appear on the list, I'll manually subscribe or unsubscribe the person, though.

9. Host of the List. The ROBLEE-L mailing list is presently installed at rootsweb.com, which is the home of the RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative. See http://www.rootsweb.com for information about RootsWeb. It's not necessary to pay anything to subscribe to any of the surname mailing lists at RootsWeb.

10. Message format and Attachments. Please submit messages only in plain text. This means that you should configure your e-mail client software (such as Eudora, Pegasus, Microsoft Outlook Express, Outlook 98, or Netscape Communicator) not to send messages in HTML format or Rich Text Format (RTF). Instructions on how to do this are shown at http://www.rootsweb.com/listowners/html-off.htm.

Also, don't submit attachments, including GEDCOMs. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Mail containing attachments will be returned to the sender, although the list owner will be notified.

Please use a helpful subject line like "John DOE d. 1800 in HA Co MD", rather than a generic one such as "inquiry about my family line."

11. Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. The ROBLEE list will accept only brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to our ROBLEE surname or families. Don't include prices, but only request that interested parties contact you privately (not via the list). In case of doubt, send the message to the list custodian, ddetling@greencity.org, and I'll review it and forward it to the list if appropriate.

12. Financial Support. As stated above, there is no charge to use this list.

13. Copyrights. Any person sending a message to this list retains the copyright to it. By sending the message, you grant to the list custodian, and to his heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large. You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in
total as a part of their replies sent back to the list.

14. Archives. At present, the archival copies are stored at
Rootsweb.com and can be retrieved by anyone. To get a list of the messages that have been archived, send a message to

ROBLEE-L-request@rootweb.com

with the subject

archive search Subject: latest/*

and nothing in the body of the message.

You'll get back a message that looks like this:

ARCHIVE search subject: latest/*
BEGIN---------------cut here------------------
latest/23:10:Subject: Re: John DOE query (fwd)
latest/24:12:Subject: Looking for Samuel FORWOOD
latest/25:15:Subject: inquiry
latest/26:15:Subject: Hitchcock Md.>Ar.>Ok.>Ar. & other western states
latest/27:17:Subject: Jon Harlan
END-----------------cut here------------------

If you decide you want to read the message about John Harlan, the "latest/27:" part of the line identifies the file containing the message.

Send another message to ROBLEE-L-request@rootweb.com
with the subject

archive send latest/27

and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time.

15. Digests. The ROBLEE-L messages are available in Digest form, beginning with the first messages sent to our list at RootsWeb. For 1998, digests 1 through 10 are duplicated in the archives (by an inadvertent mistake on my part). To obtain a complete set of the digested messages, follow the instructions below.

To retrieve an individual digest, send an e-mail message as follows:

To: Roblee-D-request@rootsweb.com
From: your e-mail address
Subject: archive get volume98/#

where the # mark refers to the number of the digest.

The digests you will need to retrieve with the GET command (typed in caps) to obtain a complete set for 1998 are as follows:

volume98/1
volume98/2
volume98/3
volume98/4
volume98/5
volume98/6
volume98/7
volume98/8
volume98/9
volume98/10
volume98/11
...
volume98/21 through 82.

For 1998 messages, digests #12-20 duplicate digests #2-10 and need not be ordered.

If you want subsequent digests, following the same pattern and get volume99/1, volume99/2, etc. Or, if you want to change permanently from ROBLEE-L to ROBLEE-D, follow instructions to unsubscribe from the ROBLEE-L list and then subscribe to ROBLEE-D.

16. Obtaining a copy of this message. This file can be retrieved by sending a message to

ROBLEE-L@rootsweb.com

with the Subject line reading Archive and the body of the message reading

GET welcome.txt

The file is also available at:

http://www.robleeonline.org/mailhelp.html

17. No-nos. Please do not submit virus alerts, chain letters, or other off-topic material to the list. Don't send copies of copyrighted material. Don't send messages exceeding 8 kilobytes in length. If you have lengthy family information to share, break the message into parts, or offer to send lengthy messages (including attachments or GEDCOM files) privately. If someone else violates these general policies, please do not send their message back to this list! That just magnifies the problem, and defeats the anti-spam defenses at RootsWeb. Do not chastise them, either. Vulgarity and personal attacks on other list members are unwelcome.
